a body which draws itself
A Body Which Draws Itself is an ongoing, iterative project exploring the body’s capacity for recording an image of itself. Utilising bondage, predicament and counterweights, Micah attempts to place the body into a situation in which the reflexes, movements and intuitive travel through space make marks that record the body’s experience. By placing the body in these states, Micah is exploring whether their focussing on motor functions in predicament scenarios can allow a flow-state to emerge, encouraging organic mark making and placing a limit on conscious, aesthetic decisions in the artwork created.
Philosophically, Micah believes that the body can contain its own selfhood in its reflexes, learned habits, limitations and extensions. From a queer perspective, they believe that the body is a site for modification and alteration to reflect the internal self, this work challenges that same position by exploring the body’s autonomy as the motor that carries this internal self through the world.
Can the inner and outer self ever be truly separated? or are they intrinsic to one another?
can the body record its own self?
